Media Positions
Media Head Powers and Responsibilities
  1. Maintain full-time undergraduate enrollment status and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  2. Establish and implement sound editorial/broadcast, advertising, fiscal, production, and personnel policies.
  3. Assume responsibility for the editorial/broadcast content of the designated media organization.
  4. Select all staff members.
  5. Supervise the daily operations of the designated media organization.
  6. Prepare and submit a budget to the Budget Committee during the spring semester.

The Trail, Editor in Chief

  1. The Trail Editor in Chief (EiC) is a full fee-paying member of ASUPS.
  2. The EiC is hired by the Vice President in consultation with the Director of Medias and Technology Services.
  3. The EiC is free from prior restraint and review.
  4. The EiC has the following powers and responsibilities:
    1. Attend Student Media Board meetings and interact with ASUPS’ governing bodies on behalf of The Trail.
    2. Make hiring recommendations to the Vice President for all The Trail student leaders.
    3. Conduct weekly team meetings.
    4. Oversee all content decisions, including but not limited to: 
      • Articles.
      • Social media posts.
      • Website content.
      • Letters to the Editor.
    5. Review all submitted articles, in consultation with editors and copy editors.
    6. Provide content feedback to The Trail’s student leaders, to:
      • Improve journalistic style writing.
      • Determine whether to pull, change, or keep an article. 
      • Ensure The Trail produces ethical, powerful, and progressive stories that are relevant to the University of Puget Sound community.
      • Maintain The Trail's esthetic integrity.
    7. Mentor student leaders and encourage professional development.
    8. Plan and facilitate workshops on topics such as journalistic ethics.
    9. Coordinate with other media heads, such as the Photo Services General Manager, to complete projects.
    10. Manage The Trail student leaders, including progress meetings and guiding new initiatives.
    11. Manage relationships with The Trail Advisor.
    12. Communicate with and beyond the campus community.
    13. Communicate important information to the publisher.
    14. Inform the Director of Medias and Technology Services if student leader contracts from The Trail need to be terminated. 
    15. Oversee and manage the budget, with the assistance of The Trail Business Manager.
    16. Oversee all other administrative aspects of The Trail.

Crosscurrents, Editor in Chief

  1. The Crosscurrents Editor in Chief (EiC) is a full fee-paying member of ASUPS.
  2. The EiC is hired by the Vice President in consultation with the Director of Medias and Technology Services.
  3. The EiC is free from prior restraint and review.
  4. The EiC has the following powers and responsibilities:
    1. Attend Student Media Board meetings and interact with ASUPS’ governing bodies on behalf of Crosscurrents.
    2. Make hiring recommendations to the Vice President for Crosscurrents student leaders.
    3. Conduct weekly team meetings.
    4. Work with Print and Copy Services to get the magazine physically published.
    5. Decide the final layout of the magazine, including the final decision on what pieces are included in the magazine
    6. Conduct campus outreach via social media.
    7. Plan the schedule for each semester based on the release date.
    8. Inform the Director of Medias and Technology Services if a Crosscurrents student leader’s contract needs to be terminated. 
    9. Oversee and manage the budget.
    10. Oversee all other administrative aspects of Crosscurrents.

Photo Services, General Manager

  1. The Photo Services General Manager (GM) is a full fee-paying member of ASUPS.
  2. The GM is hired by the Vice President in consultation with the Director of Medias and Technology Services.
  3. The GM is free from prior restraint and review.
  4. The GM has the following powers and responsibilities:
    1. Attend Student Media Board meetings and interact with ASUPS’ governing bodies on behalf of Photo Services.
    2. Make hiring recommendations to the Vice President for Photo Services photographers.
    3. Conduct weekly team meetings.
    4. Receive and assign photo requests to Photo Services photographers.
    5. Log number of events photographed for Photo Services photographers.
    6. Oversee and loan out Photo Services equipment.
    7. Fulfill photo requests in a timely manner.
    8. Inform the Director of Medias and Technology Services if a Photo Services student leader’s contract needs to be terminated. 
    9. Oversee and manage the budget.
    10. Oversee all other administrative aspects of Photo Services.

Elements, Editor in Chief

  1. The Elements Editor in Chief (EiC) is a full fee-paying member of ASUPS.
  2. The EiC is hired by the Vice President in consultation with the Director of Medias and Technology Services.
  3. The EiC is free from prior restraint and review.
  4. The EiC has the following powers and responsibilities:
    1. Attend Student Media Board meetings and interact with ASUPS’ governing bodies on behalf of Elements.
    2. Make hiring recommendations to the Vice President for Elements student leaders.
    3. Conduct weekly team meetings.
    4. Track progress of magazine production to ensure smooth and timely production of the magazine.
    5. Delegate editing responsibilities to editors as appropriate.
    6. Work closely with editors and writers throughout the editing process.
    7. Advise on layout and design of the magazine with the Elements  Design Editor.
    8. If there is no Design Editor, supervise the design process.
    9. Inform the Director of Medias and Technology Services if an Elements student leader’s contract needs to be terminated. 
    10. Oversee and manage the budget.
    11. Oversee all other administrative aspects of Elements.

Wetlands, Editor in Chief

  1. The Wetlands Editor in Chief (EiC) is a full fee-paying member of ASUPS.
  2. The EiC is hired by the Vice President in consultation with the Director of Medias and Technology Services.
  3. The EiC is free from prior restraint and review.
  4. The EiC has the following powers and responsibilities:
    1. Attend Student Media Board meetings and interact with ASUPS’ governing bodies on behalf of Wetlands.
    2. Make hiring recommendations to the Vice President for Wetlands student leaders.
    3. Conduct weekly team meetings.
    4. Oversee and approve all content decisions, including but not limited to:
      • Publications.
      • Social media posts.
      • Website content.
      • Advertising. 
    5. Work with artists and layout designers to maintain the esthetic integrity of Wetlands.
    6. Coordinate with other media heads, such as the Photo Services General Manager, to complete projects.
    7. Inform the Director of Medias and Technology Services if a Wetlands student leader’s contract needs to be terminated. 
    8. Oversee and manage the budget.
    9. Oversee all other administrative aspects of Wetlands.

Campus Films Programmer

  1. The Campus Films Programmer is a full fee-paying member of ASUPS. 
  2. The Campus Films Programmer has a budget to put on and co-sponsor events and receives a monthly stipend.
  3. The Campus Film Programmer has the following powers and responsibilities:
    1. Plan, prepare, and promote films screened during the academic year.
    2. Supervise and schedule ushers.
    3. Plan and put on an adjudicated annual student film festival, “Foolish Pleasures.”
    4. Prepare weekly deposits of revenue from films.
    5. Advertise upcoming events in conjunction with the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    6. Support other programmers in their events as needed, especially on the day of events.
    7. Carry out other projects or events at the discretion of the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    8. Attend weekly Student Programs Board meetings.

Cultural Consciousness Programmer

  1. The Cultural Consciousness Programmer is a full fee-paying member of ASUPS. 
  2. The Cultural Consciousness Programmer has a budget to put on and co-sponsor events and receives a monthly stipend.
  3. The Cultural Consciousness Programmer has the following powers and responsibilities:
    1. Identify the interests and needs of the campus community related to social justice, in consultation with the Director of Events and Public Relations and Director of Equity, Inclusion, and Justice.
    2. Plan and put on programs related to these interests and needs on campus.
    3. Collaborate with other positions and departments, including but not limited to:
      • Director of Equity, Inclusion, and Justice.
      • Identity-based clubs.
      • Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity.
    4. Advertise upcoming events in conjunction with the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    5. Support other programmers in their events as needed, especially on the day of events.
    6. Carry out other projects or events at the discretion of the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    7. Attend weekly Student Programs Board meetings.

Lectures Programmer

  1. The Lectures Programmer is a full fee-paying member of ASUPS. 
  2. The Lectures Programmer has a budget to put on and co-sponsor events and receives a monthly stipend.
  3. The Lectures Programmer has the following powers and responsibilities:
    1. Liaise with campus bodies to generate ideas for relevant speakers.
    2. Coordinate with speakers and the Director of Student Programs to produce contracts. 
    3. Coordinate and organize logistics for visiting speakers. 
    4. Advertise upcoming events in conjunction with the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    5. Support other programmers in their events as needed, especially on the day of events.
    6. Carry out other projects or events at the discretion of the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    7. Attend weekly Student Programs Board meetings.

Northwest Sounds Programmer

  1. The Northwest Sounds Programmer is a full fee-paying member of ASUPS. 
  2. The Northwest Sounds Programmer has a budget to put on and co-sponsor events and receives a monthly stipend.
  3. The Northwest Sounds Programmer has the following powers and responsibilities:
    1. Search for, organize, plan, and put on regular (at least twice a month) programming showcasing performers from the local area.
    2. Advertise upcoming events in conjunction with the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    3. Support other programmers in their events as needed, especially on the day of events.
    4. Carry out other projects or events at the discretion of the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    5. Attend weekly Student Programs Board meetings.

Performing Arts Programmer

  1. The Performing Arts Programmer is a full fee-paying member of ASUPS. 
  2. The Performing Arts Programmer has a budget to put on and co-sponsor events and receives a monthly stipend.
  3. The Performing Arts Programmer has the following powers and responsibilities:
    1. Work with the Director of Student Programs to book performers.
    2. Plan and put on performing arts events in conjunction with the Director of Events and Public Relations and the Director of Student Programs.
    3. Lead day-of logistics and lead up logistics to events.
    4. Advertise upcoming events in conjunction with the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    5. Support other programmers in their events as needed, especially on the day of events.
    6. Carry out other projects or events at the discretion of the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    7. Attend weekly Student Programs Board meetings.

Popular Entertainment Programmer

  1. The Popular Entertainment Programmer is a full fee-paying member of ASUPS. 
  2. The Popular Entertainment Programmer has a budget to put on and co-sponsor events and receives a monthly stipend.
  3. The Popular Entertainment Programmer has the following powers and responsibilities:
    1. Work with the Student Programs Board and ASUPS Cabinet to come up with performers.
    2. Broker deals and liaise with performers, their agents, and middle agents.
    3. Coordinate the logistics of the events before, during, and after performances.
    4. Advertise upcoming events in conjunction with the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    5. Support other programmers in their events as needed, especially on the day of events.
    6. Carry out other projects or events at the discretion of the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    7. Attend weekly Student Programs Board meetings.

Special Events Programmer

  1. The Special Events Programmer is a full fee-paying member of ASUPS. 
  2. The Special Events Programmer has a budget to put on and co-sponsor events and receives a monthly stipend.
  3. The Special Events Programmer has the following powers and responsibilities:
    1. Plan and put on a series of events, including but not limited to:
      • Fall Family Weekend (involvement in Fall Family Weekend has fluctuated over the years).
      • Grizz’s Winter Bash, the winter celebration of the end of the fall semester.
      • Spring Family Weekend (involvement in Spring Family Weekend has fluctuated over the years).
      • Lumbershoot, the celebration of the last day of classes in the spring.
    2. Advertise upcoming events in conjunction with the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    3. Support other programmers in their events as needed, especially on the day of events.
    4. Carry out other projects or events at the discretion of the Director of Events and Public Relations.
    5. Attend weekly Student Programs Board meetings.
