TACOMA, Wash. – With the arrival of internationally acclaimed cellist David Requiro at University of Puget Sound, the School of Music is combining his talents with those of faculty members Maria Sampen, violin, and Duane Hulbert, piano, to form again, after a 15-year absence, the Puget Sound Piano Trio. The artists will debut with a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, in Schneebeck Concert Hall. The public is welcome and no tickets are required.

The main work to be performed will be Ludwig van Beethoven’s Concerto in C Major (“Triple Concerto”), with Christophe Chagnard conducting the Symphony Orchestra. This is the same piece that was performed at the April 1993 gala opening of Schneebeck Concert Hall by the original trio, which included Duane Hulbert on piano, and former faculty members the late Edward Seferian, violin, and recently retired cellist Cordelia Wikarski-Miedel. Robert Schumann’s “Manfred” Overture will also be performed.

Each member of the new trio has significant solo playing credentials. Requiro won the esteemed Walter W. Naumburg International Violoncello Competition in New York City in 2008; Hulbert won the Gina Bachauer competition in 1980, and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002; and Sampen has appeared in numerous performances across the country with the contemporary ensemble Brave New Works and is a faculty member at Brevard Music Festival in North Carolina.

The Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Piano in C Major, Opus 56, more commonly known as the “Triple Concerto,” was the only concerto Beethoven ever wrote for more than one solo instrument and was one of relatively few concertos among the German composer’s works.

Requiro joined Puget Sound as the Cordelia Wikarski-Miedel Artist in Residence this fall. He has made concerto appearances with the Tokyo Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra, and numerous California-based orchestras. He recently performed with the Seattle Symphony under the direction of guest conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya.

Maria Sampen, associate professor, has performed as a soloist with orchestras throughout the United States and as a chamber musician in Europe, Asia, and North America. She is in demand as a performer of both standard repertoire and of new and experimental works, and performed in the world premiere of Robert Hutchinson’s Concerto for Violin and Wind Ensemble.

Duane Hulbert, distinguished professor, is beginning his 25th year at University of Puget Sound. He is a frequent performer in many venues throughout the Pacific Northwest, and has taught piano to prize-winning students at the collegiate and high school level. His recording of piano works by Alexander Glazunov was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Christophe Chagnard, director of orchestras, co-founded the Northwest Sinfonietta, has served as music director of the New England String Ensemble in Boston, and is currently music director for Lake Union Civic Orchestra. He has collaborated with distinguished soloists including Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Richard Stoltzman, Craig Sheppard, Fenwick Smith, and Clayton Brainerd.
