7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, Schneebeck Concert Hall

TACOMA, Wash. – The celebrated Puget Sound Piano Trio will perform a February concert that brings to the stage an expressive array of European classical music from three different centuries.

A brilliant trio from Mozart, a moody depiction of the changing light of day by Joaquin Turina, and a powerful Tchaikovsky work will be performed by the University of Puget Sound School of Music faculty members.

The faculty recital will start at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, in Schneebeck Concert Hall. The Puget Sound Piano Trio, reassembled in 2010, after a 15-year hiatus, includes Duane Hulbert, piano; Maria Sampen, violin; and David Requiro. The ticket information is below. The evening’s program will include:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Trio in C major, K. 548
Joaquin Turina: Circulo: Fantasy for Piano, Violin, and Violoncello, Opus 91
Peter Illyich Tchaikovsky: Piano Trio in A minor, Opus 50

The Mozart piano trio recalls the structure and texture of the German composer’s earlier Piano Sonata K330, which is in the same key, pianist Duane Hulbert said. The work’s center movement interweaves lyrical melodies between the three instruments, while the finale is a romping allegro, with a darker middle section.

Spanish composer Joaquin Turina was a lesser-known member of a Spanish composer quartet that included Isaac Albéniz, Manuel de Falla, and Enrique Granados. The quartet flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Circulo, written in 1936, at the Spanish Civil War outbreak, has three movements, each depicting a different time of day: dawn, midday, and dusk.

The Tchaikovsky trio is one of the most dramatic of the piano trios from the Romantic era. Tchaikovsky dedicated the piece to “the memory of a great artist,” referring to his Russian colleague and friend Nicolai Rubinstein, who died in 1890.

“This trio is a virtuosic tour de force for all of the players,” Hulbert said. “The quiet, but the powerfully emotional ending is among the most dramatic of any work in the chamber music canon.”

Duane Hulbert, distinguished professor and chair of piano at Puget Sound, has toured the United States and Europe, winning rave reviews. He has won prestigious prizes at numerous competitions, including the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in Salt Lake City and Paloma O’Shea International Piano Competition in Spain. Hulbert’s students have won major competitions and held distinguished positions across the country. His recording of works by Alexander Glazunov was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002, and, in fall 2014, he released the four-CD collection Glazunov: Complete Works for Piano.

Maria Sampen, associate professor and director of strings at Puget Sound, has performed as a concerto soloist with orchestras across the United States and as a chamber musician in Europe, Asia, and North America. She is in demand as a performer of both standard and experimental works and frequently collaborates with leading composers. In addition to the Puget Sound Piano Trio, Sampen is a member of The IRIS Orchestra and Brave New Works. She also is on the violin faculty at the Brevard Music Festival in North Carolina.

David Requiro is the Cordelia Wikarski-Miedel Artist in Residence at Puget Sound. He has taken first prize awards at the Walter W. Naumburg International Violoncello Competition and the Washington International and Irving M. Klein International string competitions and a top prize at the Gaspar Cassado International Violoncello Competition in Japan. Required has made concerto appearances with the Tokyo Philharmonic, National Symphony, and Seattle Symphony orchestras, among others, and has been a featured soloist at Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center.
