SDC History

SDC History

The Student Diversity Center was established in 1996 following student petitions for an on-campus space that would encourage exploration of personal & group identity. In 2016, the SDC was expanded, renovated, and joined by the Social Justice Center (SJC) in response & support of student organizing

Everyone is Welcome!

Everyone is Welcome!

All students at Puget Sound are welcome to participate and utilize the SDC & SJC. The SDC especially serves as a frequent meeting, community, and event space for student member groups/organizations that are historically underrepresented in higher education/at UPS

Stop By

Stop By

The SDC & SJC regular hours are Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Feel free to stop by during those hours to hang out, do homework, watch TV, meditate/pray in our new room in the SJC, browse the library, or check the calendar for upcoming events

Student Diversity Centers

Our newly renovated Student Diversity Centers, the SDC (Student Diversity Center) and SJC (Social Justice Center), are located on 13th & Lawrence. They are directly across from the Center for Intercultural and Civic Engagement (The Yellow House), and are blue and sage colored, respectively. Check them out through a virtual tour

The Student Diversity Centers (SDC & SJC) support student success through programs and shared spaces that bring awareness to, honor, and uplift the wide range of students' identities at UPS. Though open to all who strive for equity and inclusion, the SDCs especially serve students who identify as historically underrepresented by way of ethnicity, race, gender, religion, documentation status, socioeconomic class, first generation (in higher education), and sexual orientation. The SDC encourages solidarity within shared identities; collaboration amongst diverse student groups; and recognizes the importance of communal spaces for historically marginalized/minoritized persons.

  • Provide a supportive environment in which to gather informally as well as a resource library, study, meeting, and event space
  • Sponsor programs designed to strengthen students' abilities to engage both critically and inclusively across difference
  • Advocate pride and promote community among group identities
  • Maintain a monthly calendar of activities sponsored and/or endorsed by the groups
  • Educate the greater campus community about diverse groups and their respective issues by sponsoring programs, lectures, and other special events
  • Foster engagement within campus and the greater Tacoma community
