Rebecca encourages students to begin assessing their interests and exploring career options early—through job-shadows, part-time jobs, volunteer roles, and internships. She guides students to reflect on the meaning of those experiences and to consider how they relate to the student's career path.
When not teaching a Career Awareness course, or helping students navigate internship options, Rebecca roots for the Seattle Seahawks, and spoils her nephew and nieces.
What was your first, or an early work experience that impacted your career path?
My first 7 jobs: babysitter, childcare at my church, receptionist at a property management company, resident assistant, deli clerk, dining hall server, and desk assistant. What I learned from these jobs was the importance of customer service and a service-oriented attitude—wanting to make someone’s day better and knowing that the small actions you take can leave a powerful imprint on someone’s experience whether they be 5 years old or 85.
What did you learn in your major field of study that you currently use in your work?
I majored in Finance and graduated in 2008 (at the height of the recession—a hard time to hold a B.A. in Business Admin with an emphasis in Finance). But starting as a first-year student, I was involved in residence life. I spent 2 years as an RA and a year as an Assistant Hall Director before graduating—these experiences shaped what I wanted out of a career. Student and leadership development was a fascination, so I pursued a career in higher ed. What I carried over from my education included my ability to strategize and make plans to increase efficiency and change processes up when needed.
What is your favorite location/event/hidden gem/thing about Tacoma?
My favorite location in Tacoma has to be Point Defiance. I love the feeling that within half a mile you’re in nature, the views and serenity of going for a hike (plus any location that is dog-friendly is a good one). Afterward, if you’re looking for a grab-and-go restaurant, check out Tatanka Take Out for some bison burgers (or the vegan flawless burrito with tofu—my fav).
