Dear Members of the Campus Community,

On Thursday, April 1, journalist, activist, and bestselling author Masha Gessen will deliver the Spring 2021 Susan Resneck Pierce Lecture in Public Affairs and the Arts. I am delighted to welcome Gessen to our campus—albeit remotely—for what I know will be a fascinating talk. In addition, the event will include a conversation with Professor of Sociology Jennifer Utrata.

As an observer and writer, Gessen's scope includes Russian history and current events, LGBTQ rights, autocracy, and more. In addition to regular keen and trenchant dispatches as a staff writer for The New Yorker, they are the author of eleven books, including The Future Is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia, which garnered the 2017 National Book Award for Nonfiction, and the more recent Surviving Autocracy about the state of American democracy during the Trump administration.

The Pierce Lectures are open to the Puget Sound campus community and members of the general public. There is no charge for this virtual event, but registration is required.
