Virtual Lecture: "Does Promoting Democracy Make Sense? Did It Ever?"

The United States' mixed record of promoting democracy over the course of a century, and especially in the past two decades, should force us to reflect on its impact and consequences. This talk, from the perspectives of a practitioner of democratic institution building—as a military peacekeeper and academic consultant—and then a scholar of democratization, looks at the history, theoretical foundations and contemporary examples of the United States' attempts to promote globally more open and accountable political systems.
