The program includes vocal and instrumental compositions by Wendy Carlos, Clara Schumann, Amy Beach, Alma Mahler, Lili Boulanger, Florence Price, Marilyn Shrude, Lori Laitman, Libby Larsen, Caroline Shaw, and Zina Goldrich, and poetry by Billie Holiday, Emily Dickinson, Kathryn Daniels, and Marcy Heisler. In addition, the concert includes special arrangements created by Puget Sound Alumnae Grace Youn ’13, Caitlin Kerwin ’17, and Emily Laliotis ’18 that celebrate prominent female popular artists such as Joni Mitchell, The Supremes, Donna Summer, Gloria Estefan, Madonna, Missy Elliot, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, and Beyoncé. Puget Sound music faculty members and students, and What She Said, Puget Sound’s treble-voiced a cappella group, will perform.
Dr. Dawn Padula, Puget Sound’s director of vocal studies, associate professor of voice, and curator of this Jacobsen Series event, offers the following note:
"I designed this concert to be a celebration of women in music, past and present, by featuring female composers in addition to female performers, poets, and arrangers. The program is intentionally eclectic and showcases female composers from the genres of classical music, jazz, musical theatre, and popular culture, as well as dynamic performers, recording artists, poets/lyricists, and singer-songwriters."
