Jacobsen Series: Celebrate Black History

Tickets Required

Honoring Black History Month, this performance will feature a wide spectrum of seldom-heard gems by African American Composers, ranging ranging from Scott Joplin’s last published piano rag to Olly Wilson’s searing duet for tenor and electronic tape based on the spiritual “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child.” Delight to love songs by living composer Adolphus Hailstork, ingenious folk song settings for string quartet by Florence B. Price, Margaret Bonds’s virtuosic Troubled Water for solo piano, and George Walker’s luminous Lyric for Strings.

Puget Sound faculty performers Maria Sampen, Anna Wittstruck, Timothy Christie, and Gwynne Kuhner Brown will be joined by alumnae Brenda Miller '15 and Larissa Freier '17, exemplary current Puget Sound music students, and guest artist Albert R. Lee, associate professor and director of vocal studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. Professor Brown will provide commentary on the featured music and composers.
