Honors Thesis Presentation: Cloelia: The “Wo”man, the Myth, the Legend

Campus Only

Swimming across the rushing Tiber river back to Rome, a young girl escape her hostage situation in Etruria. Cloelia’s story is one not widely discussed in scholarship, but is one which appears in a wide variety of texts throughout antiquity. From Livy recounting her myth in his History of Rome to Manilius placing her among heroes in the stars in the Astronomica, Cloelia's myth is on the minds of ancient authors. Join me as I explore the myth of Cloelia and grapple with questions of where she appears in antiquity and, more importantly, why.
