GQS Faculty Colloquium - Heather White

Campus Only

Heather White will discuss a recent essay publication, titled, “How Heterosexuality Became Religious: Judeo-Christian Morality and the Remaking of Sex in Twentieth-Century America”

We’ve heard it stated a plain fact: “Judeo-Christian morality has always defined traditional marriage as exclusively heterosexual.” But is this statement a fact? This colloquium will feature a conversation with Heather White about her research, which examines the conjoined history of these two concepts—“Judeo-Christian” and “heterosexuality”—to show that this seeming fact is a surprisingly recent invention. The essay is available for you to read in advance, but you are also welcome to attend just to listen and ask questions.
