Innovative music, ideas, food, and conversation - Thursday, Sept. 19 at Kittredge Art Gallery

TACOMA, Wash. – The next Art+Science Salon will showcase two pioneering musical groups who use science and technology to create or inspire their music. The first fall gathering of the new school year will bring together scientists, artists, musicians, and the public, providing an evening where people with divergent interests can discover fresh ideas and new collaborators.

The Art+Science Salon will be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, September 19 in the special venue of Kittredge Art Gallery on the campus of University of Puget Sound. Everyone is welcome to the free event. There will be food, music, conversation with the musicians, and time for mingling.

Cellist David Balatero composer and musician Marcin Paczkowski, and saxophonist Ivan Arteaga will perform. The show will include music that is computer-performed, or created via machine learning, and that is produced by both analog and digital devices.

The evening also will include an informal panel of musicians and University of Puget Sound professors who will chat with the audience about music, science, and technology.

The Art+Science Salon series, which takes place on the free admission 3rd Thursday Tacoma Art Mingle held by local galleries each month, will return to its regular venue of the Tacoma Art Museum in October.

The series was created through a partnership between University of Puget Sound and Tacoma Art Museum. The salons aim to bring scientists, artists, and interdisciplinary thinkers together through conversations and through the collaborations that may emerge from these dialogues. The Art+Science Committee at Puget Sound includes Suzanne Holland, the John B. Magee Professor of Science and Values; Siddharth Ramakrishnan, the Jennie M. Caruthers Chair in Neuroscience; Elise Richman, associate professor of art; and Peter Wimberger, professor of biology and director of Slater Museum of Natural History. The endowed Jennie M. Caruthers Chair in Neuroscience, held by Siddharth Ramakrishnan, was funded through the generosity of Marvin H. Caruthers P’02, distinguished professor of biochemistry and chemistry at the University of Colorado Boulder, in memory of his late wife Jennie M. Caruthers. The gift was made as part of the $125 million One [of a Kind] campaign.
