TACOMA, Wash. – University of Puget Sound professors Emelie Peine, in international political economy, and Bernard Bates, in physics, were called upon by the media to lend their expertise to two diverse topics.

Emelie Peine, who is currently doing research in Brazil, was interviewed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Sydney for a story about the takeover of the country’s biggest agribusiness by U.S. food giant ADM. Peine is a specialist in global agricultural commodities and teaches courses examining global trade, monetary policies, development and debt relief, and the role of agribusiness in the food and hunger equation.

Bernard Bates, is an expert and enthusiast of planetary astronomy, exploration of the solar system, and space technology. He teaches courses in general physics, astronomy, astrophysics, and Mars exploration. He has worked with lunar soils and micrometeorites. He also gives presentations on searching for extraterrestrial life with your home computer. Bates was interviewed by a Canadian reporter for the online news and lifestyle magazine The Loop on the question of “Is there any proof that aliens exist?”
