September 30, 2012

SPOKANE, Wash. – A four-match winning streak came to an end for the Puget Sound women's soccer team as it fell 1-0 to Whitworth on Sunday. The Loggers (5-3-1, 4-1-1 NWC) fell for the first time in conference play despite holding a shot advantage in the match.

The Loggers outshot the Pirates (6-4-1, 6-0-1 NWC) 9-3 in the first half and 12-7 in the match. However, it was the Pirates that were able to sneak in a goal. Tiara Pajimola tallied her sixth goal of the season as she dribbled in past two defenders and scored in the 56th minute. Kristin Grant earned an assist on the play.

Kara Merfeld made three saves for the Loggers but allowed just her first goal of the season. The Loggers put five of their 12 shots on goal but Andrea Stump was there to keep each of them out of the net and preserve the shutout for Whitworth.

The Loggers return home next Saturday for a noon matchup with Lewis & Clark.
