As a new faculty member at Puget Sound, there are a variety of university orientation programs/events you are invited to attend. For your convenience, they are all listed here, and you may RSVP for all events using a single form. Please RSVP by July 15.
Murray Board Room, Wheelock Student Center 108
This full-day orientation provides your introduction to academic life at Puget Sound, including matters of curriculum and teaching, scholarship, and campus involvement. Follow-up faculty orientation activities will also occur throughout the year.
Collins Memorial Library, Room 017
Educational technologists will share how they assist faculty in support of teaching and learning with technology. Learn how we incorporate digital pedagogy, academic and/or specialized hardware and software, active learning, course design, and curriculum creation with a technology focus, and what services are available to you as campus faculty.
Collins Memorial Library, Room 118
Join librarians and faculty colleagues for a lively interactive discussion that will showcase the programs and services we have developed to address information literacy and the many research opportunities available for student scholars. We'll provide an overview of our unique and special collections with emphasis on collaborative learning programs that increase research skills and address critical thinking. In addition, learn about how we support your own research through our collection and specialized services.
Collins Memorial Library, East Reading Room, 1st Floor
Join librarians, educational technologists, and members of the faculty Library, Media, and Information Services Committee (LMIS) for an informal luncheon to cap off the morning sessions.
Collins Memorial Library, Room 017
Join colleagues from the Associate Academic Deans Office/Educational Technology Office for an introduction to navigating your course information in the campus' main information system, MyPugetSound, and an introductory training on our Learning Management System, Canvas. Learn course design best practices, how to add/edit your Canvas course content, and the most popular features to get you started!
Murray Board Room, Wheelock Student Center Room 108
This important session provides the opportunity to learn about the university organization, policies, health care, and other benefits. You will receive an invitation in the summer from Human Resources.
Center for Writing, Learning, and Teaching, Howarth Hall, Room 109
The goal of this faculty-led workshop is to offer you some tools for teaching writing effectively at Puget Sound, regardless of your discipline. We will look at a student paper from Puget Sound and discuss ways that we might respond productively to the student, and we will discuss strategies for designing effective writing assignments (including assignments with a research component) and commenting efficiently on student papers.
We'll also have sample assignments from a variety of disciplines that reflect Puget Sound's commitment to writing and information literacy. We encourage you to bring a draft-in-process of a writing assignment or a syllabus in order to get some feedback from Puget Sound colleagues before you share the assignment/syllabus with students. There will be time to talk informally about student expectations and typical writing assignment sequences in Puget Sound courses.
We'll begin the half-day workshop with breakfast and conversation from 8:30-9 a.m., and the workshop itself will begin at 9 a.m. and end promptly at noon. You will have the opportunity to join colleagues at the student union café afterwards for an informal, no-host lunch.
Courtyard Marriott, downtown Tacoma
In accord with long-standing tradition, we will begin the new academic year with a faculty dinner. The dinner will be held at the Courtyard Marriott downtown, catered by Pacific Grill. For those of you who have not previously attended, the event includes brief remarks by the president and the provost, the introduction of new faculty members, and the announcement of teaching, research, and service awards. The dinner offers an opportunity for conversation and community with faculty from across the campus. See your Puget Sound email for transportation/parking information.
This invitation to dinner is extended only to full-time faculty members and to the members of the President’s Cabinet. The social hour will begin at 6 p.m., with the buffet dinner to follow at 7 p.m. We look forward to interaction with faculty spouses, partners, or guests; staff members; and staff and faculty families at the LogJam picnic on Friday, September 6 at 5 p.m.
