In 2014, Sustainability Services celebrated Earth Day by increasing waste consumption awareness through building a giant cardboard box castle in Wheelock Student Center! Check out how this project worked below.

In 2014, our department was inspired by other schools' box castles, and we thought it would be a great tradition to bring to the University of Puget Sound! Each year during March, we save all the cardboard boxes that we collect in our daily recycling pickups (more than 1,500 each year!) and use them to construct a castle in Marshall Hall. The box castle is a fun way to visually show the campus community how much waste our school produces. While recycling boxes are great, it is even better to reduce waste production altogether. After the Box Castle, the boxes are given away to students to use for Move-Out.
