With the promise to foster better communication and safer sex, Professor Kessel argues they instead entrench a transactional and indemnifying logic whose primary aim is to avoid accusations of sexual assault, not assault itself. Created in an industry dominated by so-called “tech bros,” still reeling from scandals like “Gamergate,” and fraught with white supremacy, misogyny, and homophobia, these new consent technologies reveal a desire to prevent rape allegations, rather than prevent rape. As part of Professor Kessel’s current work exploring rape culture in an explicitly intersectional way, the Daedalus Society is pleased to invite you to an evening of good company and lively debate. All members of the university community including faculty, staff, retirees, partners, and friends are welcome. Faculty and staff members are encouraged to bring interested students to this event as their guests. Join us in person!
