COVID-19 Quarantine Plans
Plan for Individuals Suspected to Have Been Exposed to COVID-19
In the event of a confirmed case of COVID-19 on campus, the university will follow Tacoma-Pierce County Public Health Department’s quarantine recommendations. Students, faculty, and staff with exposure to a confirmed case will be encouraged to quarantine. The university will first determine who may have been exposed. In general, the university will focus on faculty, staff, and students who have been in close contact with the patient because it is believed close contact with a sick person is needed to become infected. Close contact includes:
- Living in the same household as a sick person with COVID-19 (includes residence hall room and off-campus house; may also include Greek houses or residence hall floors);
- Caring for a sick person with COVID-19;
- Being within 6 feet of a sick person with a COVID-19 positive person for about 10 minutes; or
- Being in direct contact with secretions from a sick person with COVID-19 (e.g., kissing, sharing utensils, being coughed on, etc).
Quarantine will be for 14 days from the last date of contact with the positive person or a length of time directed by Pierce County public health department. Quarantine will continue even if the close contact tests negative for COVID-19.
Quarantine Plan for Students
- As necessary, available vacant residence hall rooms will be used for quarantine purposes.
- Students who are quarantined must wear masks when they go to the bathrooms and avoid common areas. Quarantined students should not leave their rooms except as noted above, nor go to offices or public spaces.
- Meals can be ordered from The Diner for delivery. Students can email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information about their dining.
- If a student becomes symptomatic with symptoms consistent with COVID-19, they should call Counseling, Health, and Wellness Services (CHWS) for advice.
- Students living off campus will be advised to quarantine in their off-campus residences. Additional off-campus housing options will be reviewed with students who cannot safely quarantine at home.
Quarantine Plan for Faculty and Staff Members
- Faculty and staff members should follow appropriate quarantine guidelines as recommended by their health care providers and Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. In general, close contacts of COVID-19 positive patients should remain quarantined for 14 days and monitor for symptoms.
- Faculty and staff members who are quarantined should NOT report to work in person. Remote work may continue when possible.
- If a faculty/staff member becomes symptomatic, they should contact their primary care provider for advice. Screening for COVID-19 may be recommended.
Recommendations for immunocompromised people: Immunocompromised people are especially at risk for contracting the COVID-19 virus and can explore remote-learning options. Additional steps to minimize contracting the virus:
- Practice social distancing.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Clean hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing, or after being in a public space.
- If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- As possible, avoid touching high-touch surfaces in public spaces.
- Avoid touching your face, nose, eyes.
- Clean and disinfect your room/home space often.
- Avoid crowds, especially in poorly ventilated areas.
- Avoid all nonessential travel.
