Robust testing is important to prevent the spread of COVID-19. All students who choose to return to campus for the 2020–21 academic year will be required to participate in testing throughout the semester, and faculty and staff members are strongly encouraged to take advantage of on-campus testing options.
COVID-19 symptom/exposure testing and regular testing for asymptomatic individuals will be available. At Puget Sound, our testing strategy will have two components:
Symptomatic testing will be available for students who have symptoms consistent with SARS-CoV-2, or students who have had close contact with a person who tests positive for COVID-19. In-office testing by PCR with same-day results will be available to students in Counseling, Health, and Wellness Services at a cost of $45 per test. Additional testing, including strep tests, mononucleosis tests, and influenza tests will be available. The university has partnered with Multicare to establish priority care for our students at the Multicare COVID clinic located in University Place. This partnership will allow students to have a virtual touchpoint with Multicare for initial assessment of symptoms and access to the University Place site for same-day priority scheduling and rapid testing. Students also will have access to Multicare’s after-hours consulting nurses.
Regular testing of asymptomatic individuals leads to viral detection in those who may not be experiencing any symptoms. Research has shown that people without symptoms who have the virus are able to spread the infection to others. In fact, a person may be at the highest risk for transmitting the virus one to two days before they develop symptoms. When a student tests positive for COVID-19, our contact tracing and isolation procedure will be activated.
Counseling, Health, and Wellness Services (CHWS) is teaming up with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department to offer COVID-19 testing on campus through the health department's mobile testing units. Testing on the following dates will take place in the Wheelock Student Center parking lot (No. P1 on our campus map). Appointments are not required, but they help us prepare for and manage the number of people coming to campus on test days. Make an appointment.
Everyone must complete a mass testing consent form and COVID-19 requisition form to be tested. Complete and print these forms before you arrive to save yourself time and help the testing process go smoothly. Forms must be printed single-sided.
Positive test results will be available within 48 hours, and those who test positive will receive a phone call from Tacoma-Pierce County Public Health. Negative test results will be sent via email, text message, or phone call and should arrive within seven days. If you do not receive notification of your test results, call Dispatch Health at 833.723.0490.
