Plan for Individuals Suspected to Have Been Exposed to COVID-19

In the event of a confirmed case of COVID-19 on campus, the university will follow Tacoma-Pierce County Public Health Department’s quarantine recommendations which depend on an individual's COVID vaccination status. Students, faculty, and staff with exposure to a confirmed case will be contacted by the university's contact tracing team.

Close contact includes:

  • Living in the same household as a sick person with COVID-19 (includes residence hall room and off-campus house; may also include Greek houses or residence hall floors);
  • Caring for a sick person with COVID-19;
  • Being within 6 feet of a COVID-19 positive person for 15 minutes or longer; or
  • Being in direct contact with secretions from a sick person with COVID-19 (e.g., kissing, sharing utensils, being coughed on, etc).

To report close contact, email contacttracing@pugetsound.edu.

Close contacts who have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 do not need to quarantine. They will be instructed to get a COVID-19 test three to five days after exposure, wear a mask, monitor for symptoms, and repeat COVID-19 testing six to 10 days after the close contact. If a close contact develops symptoms, they should stay home, quarantine, and seek a medical appointment for a COVID-19 test as soon as possible.

Close contacts who are not fully vaccinated for COVID-19 will be instructed to quarantine for 14 days from the last date of contact with the positive person. If they remain asymptomatic, they should get a COVID-19 test three to five days after exposure, wear a mask, monitor for symptoms, and repeat COVID-19 testing six to 10 days after the close contact. If a close contact develops symptoms, they should seek a medical appointment for a COVID-19 test.

Quarantine Plan for Students

  • Residence Life has reserved campus housing for quarantine purposes.
  • Students who are quarantined must wear masks when they go to the bathrooms and avoid common areas. Quarantined students should not leave their rooms except as noted above, nor go to offices or public spaces.
  • Meals may be ordered from The Diner for delivery. To request a meal delivery, visit Quarantine and Isolation Meal Order.
  • If a student becomes symptomatic with symptoms consistent with COVID-19, they should call Counseling, Health, and Wellness Services (CHWS) for advice.
  • Students living off campus will be advised to quarantine in their off-campus residences. Additional off-campus housing options will be reviewed with students who cannot safely quarantine at home.
