Creating a poster to promote your campus event? Great! Use these tips to help make your poster effective, engaging, and easy to read!

Content and overall message

Before you begin, make sure you have all the information you need to publicize your news or event.

  • who, what, where, when, why
  • title(s) of the event
  • images and photo credits
  • ticket information
  • sponsors
  • contact information
  • website
  • accessibility information

Ask yourself: Are the images high quality? Are they royalty-free? Is there too much information? Is there enough?

Keep descriptions short by sending people to a website for more info. To catch someone’s attention, often less is more.

Create a Hierarchy

Using the information you have gathered, decide how it will be shown in order of importance. Your layout will establish the hierarchy and how you use images, size, fonts and font-weight, colors, repetition, etc. Begin with one main idea (could be an image or title) represented largest or most prominently. From there, decide the second most important information (might be a date or a speaker's name), treat that with less importance, and so on.

Principles of Design

Contrast — Unique elements in a design should stand apart from one another. One way to do this is to use contrast in a design, which can be achieved using elements such as color, tone, size, and more. Contrast allows the eye to flow naturally.

Alignment — Proper alignment in a design means that every element is visually connected to another element. Alignment allows for cohesiveness; nothing feels out of place or disconnected when alignment has been handled well.

Repetition — Repetition breeds cohesiveness in a design. Once a design pattern has been established—for example, a dotted border or a specific typographic styling—repeat this pattern to establish consistency.

Proximity — Proximity allows for visual unity in a design. If two elements are related to each other, they should be placed in close proximity to one another. Doing so minimizes the visual clutter, emphasizes organization, and increases viewer comprehension.

Always include Puget Sound.

Always include "University of Puget Sound" or "Puget Sound." Even if your poster is only being distributed on campus, it is important always to include the college’s name somehow. This ensures that if a poster is taken off-campus, anyone who reads it will know for sure it’s about something happening at Puget Sound. It also tells the viewer that it is an official college event. If a department, office sponsors the event or group on campus, use the university logo to emphasize that it is university-sponsored.
