Becoming Modern: Paris 1870-1900

This course focuses on the years 1870 to 1900 in Paris, a period marked by profound transformations in politics, society and the arts. Students follow a cast of characters, from politicians and architects to writers and artists, as they come to terms with modernity through these turbulent years and seek to answer the question: What does it mean to become modern? Students who sign up for this course must be willing to actively participate in a role-playing academic game which will make up a significant portion of the class sessions.
