Israel, Palestine and the Politics of the Middle East

This course focuses on the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, and the relationship between this conflict and the politics of the Middle East. The course begins with an overview of the emergence of the Israeli state, and the competing national identities of the Palestinian and Israel people. The subsequent wars between Israel and its neighbors are also considered, as well as the emergence of terrorism as a political tool. This is followed by an analysis of the peace process between Israel, the Palestinians and neighboring states, as well as the domestic institutions and issues within Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. The course concludes with a discussion of the obstacles to peace between Israelis and Palestinians and between Israel and other.
