European Political Systems

An overview of the political systems of Europe that covers both the advanced industrial democracies of Western Europe and the emerging democratic regimes of Eastern Europe. The focus of this course is comparative, and students should expect to study a number of substantive themes such as the decline of "post-War settlement" and the crisis of the welfare state, the decline of party politics and the rise of "single-issue" movements, the move toward a more comprehensive European union, and the democratization and "marketization" of East European nations. Different instructors may decide to focus on one or more themes and /or one or more regions of Europe.
