A History of Ceramics Through Making

As one of the first technological discoveries made by humans, ceramics has an extremely rich history. New uses for this diverse material are still being developed today. Students focus on the techniques and practice of making ceramic objects while, in parallel, leaning about and researching the history of his worldwide innovation. Skills learned build upon one another chronologically. Critiques, reading, and discussions supplement and enrich students' working knowledge of clay as a material and provide a historical context in which to view ceramics in the present. Classes frequently begin with lectures followed by in-class work time. Creative production is balanced with reading, writing, and oral presentation.
