Puget Sound creates a rich and vibrant learning environment for students interested in vocal study, choral performance, opera, and musical theater. Opera students perform fully-stated operas and musicals with orchestra accompaniment, and students in the four choirs study and perform literature ranging from Renaissance madrigals to contemporary work, a cappella to accompanied oratorio.
Founded in 1932, Adelphian Concert Choir is one of the signature groups of the university and is recognized as one of the Northwest’s most acclaimed ensembles. For more than 80 years this auditioned choir has sustained a level of choral excellence that has brought accolades from audiences in Canada, Europe, and on the West Coast. It has appeared at the state, regional, and national conventions of both the American Choral Directors Association and the Music Educators National Conference. Consistently, the Adelphians receive the highest acclaim for standards in repertoire, interpretation, and musicianship.
The Dorian Singers is an auditioned, Soprano/Alto choir that sings both accompanied and a cappella literature. Now in its third decade, the Dorians have become recognized in the Northwest as one of the leading treble ensembles. It performs varied repertoire at a high artistic level in concerts and festivals on campus.
Selected from the Adelphian Concert Choir, this a cappella ensemble performs in holiday concerts every December. Its repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to the 21st century and sings without a conductor.
Our interest in musical stage works runs the gamut of the repertoire. Annually we present a full-length production of an opera, operetta, or musical. Past productions have included Amadeus, Cosi fan tutti, Hansel and Gretel, Merry Wives of Windsor, The Bartered Bride, Mikado, La Finta Giardiniera, Die Fledermaus, Patience, The Pirates of Penzance and Too Many Sopranos!.
Chorale is a non-auditioned mixed choral ensemble that is open to all singers regardless of musical background. The choir rehearses twice a week and performs at least twice during fall and spring semesters. Emphasis is on building vocal technique and reading ability.
