2009 High School Tournament

Dear Director of Forensics,

The Washington Alpha Chapter of Pi Kappa Delta National Forensics Honorary, home of the 2006 National Champions in parliamentary debate, and the Communication Studies Department at the University of Puget Sound invite you and your students to participate in our 76th Annual UPS High School Forensics Tournament.  The tournament is January 9 and 10, 2009.

Please Note that this year we will once again be using an on-line entry system.  You must register to use this system at www.forensicstournament.net.  If you have any problems with the site, please let me know at dbuescher@pugetsound.edu.

We will continue to offer Lincoln Douglas Debate, Policy Debate, Individual Events, and Student Congress. We cannot add additional events because of limited campus space.  We will continue to host the New Judge Workshops.  These sessions are designed as an orientation for new coaches, parents, forensics alumni, and other friends of the activity who would like additional preparation before entering the judging pool.  We invite you to encourage anyone who is interested to participate.

As in years past, Lincoln-Douglas and Policy debate will run concurrently on Friday.  We will continue to offer elimination rounds from quarters on in novice and junior and from octos on in Open of LD. Please note this is based on last year’s numbers and if rooms cannot handle entries we will revert to a schedule that allows us to run the tournament as efficiently as possible.

As with previous years, we will attempt to minimize impact on Wheelock Student Center (WSC) and keep the tournament on time with:

  • Earlier start times
  • Double-flighting of all L-D rounds
  • Fee collection separate from registration on Friday and Saturday evenings
    • If you are paying with a purchase order, at fee collection you will be provided with a receipt and appropriate paperwork. Coaches or guardians are responsible for turning that paperwork into accountants for processing of payment.

Enclosed with this letter please find documents on:

  • General Information on the tournament including registration guidelines, information on entry, divisions, patterns, matching, awards, parking, and lodging
  • Tournament Speech Statement
  • Event rules
  • Explanation of Entry Fees
  • Tournament Schedule
  • Registration Forms

We hope you will join us in January for a friendly and competitive tournament experience that celebrates the University of Puget Sound's commitment to excellence in forensics education.
