Dr. Bob Boyles, PT, DSc, OCS, FAAOMPT is currently a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. His primary areas of instruction include orthopaedics , manual therapy treatment techniques for the spine and extremities, introduction to joint mobilization, advanced spine manipulation, and musculoskeletal imaging.  He is retired from the U.S. Army where he was Associate Professor at the U.S. Army-Baylor University Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology from Eastern Washington University in 1989, his entry-level Masters degree in Physical Therapy from Baylor University in 1991, and completed his advanced clinical doctoral degree in 2002 from U.S. Army-Baylor University Doctoral Program in Orthopaedics and Manual Physical Therapy.  He has been invited to lecture at numerous seminars and universities in the United States, Europe, and Asia on the topics of manual therapy interventions, manipulation, and radiology.  He stays active in clinical research concerning manual therapy and manipulation, has several peer-reviewed publications to his credit, and  is a 2 time recipient of the Rose Excellence in Research Award by the APTA. Dr Boyles is a board certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists.

Course Description:

Patients with lumbopelvic spine pain make up a large percentage of all patients receiving outpatient physical therapy. Join your colleagues in this evidence-based, hands-on course that integrates your clinical expertise with the most the current perspectives in physical therapy clinical examination and interventions for the lumbopelvic spine, and associated hip impairments. Spend two days refining and advancing your skills in clinical examination, evaluation, diagnosis, and selected interventions. Extensive laboratory sessions are included throughout the two days to achieve proficiency in selected in both mobilization and manipulative manual physical therapy interventions. Additionally, there will be lectures on lumbar spine and pelvis imaging. 

Course Objectives: 

  • Discuss the treatment based classification system for patients with lumbopelvic disorders.
  • Identify patients and match them to the appropriate classification group.
  • Apply appropriate thrust and non-thrust manual therapy techniques and exercise intervention for the patient with lumbopelvic disorders.
  • Discuss regional interdependence of the hip in relation to lumbopelvic pain
  • Apply appropriate thrust and non-thrust manual therapy techniques and exercise intervention for the patient with associated hip impairments.
  • Understand the appropriateness criteria and imaging modalities associated with the lumbar spine and pelvis.
