How to Apply

  1. In September of the year you plan to apply to enter graduate school, attend the Fall Meeting for Applicants. Current students as well as alumni are invited to participate.
  2. Solicit letters of recommendation and create a veCollect account. veCollect is an online repository that allows recommenders to electronically submit letters of recommendation. Recommenders should be individuals who know you well and can write about you from first-hand observations. Provide each with a copy of your resume and personal statement. 

    Note: Make sure that you choose the option to waive your rights to read the letters of recommendation. The HPA Committee will only use those letters in which you have waived your rights in the committee letter. 
  3. Begin your personal statement essay early. It will be revised many times.
  4. Participate in the Health Professions Advising practice interviews offered by the HPA Office in the spring of your junior or senior year. Sign up in the HPA Office.
  5. Consider how you will prepare for the required admissions test and when you will take it. If you choose to take a preparation class, check to see if one is offered on campus. The DAT, GRE, PCAT, and MCAT are offered electronically.  Plan to take the MCAT in April, May or June. Tests taken after early July typically involve a delay in scoring, with final scores not available until mid to late October; past some early application deadlines. We highly encourage you to apply only when you have your test score. 
  6. Research schools to which you will apply. Each has a website with up-to-date information. For example, medical schools are listed on the AMCAS website or can be found in these documents and websites: MD-PHD Programs in US, Dental Schools and Allied Education Programs, or Osteopathic Medical College Information. This is a good time to begin to think about how you will pay for health professional school. Besides financial aid in the form of loans offered by individual schools, the armed forces offer scholarships for tuition and fees in exchange for service as a military officer.
  7. Attend the January application meeting.
  8. Sign up in January for a mock interview which will take place from February to April. For medical school applicants: a mock interview is required if you request a committee letter of evaluation. A pre-mock interview form, with a draft of your personal statement, must be submitted at least one week prior to your mock interview.
  9. Most applications to health professional schools are filed with on-line application services. You will file one application with them along with transcripts to all schools you have attended. Begin to prepare your application in May and file it early. June 1 is the date for submitting your application. Submit your Request for Committee Letter by June 1st as well. 
  10. Apply Early! June 1 is the official beginning of the application cycle. The earlier in June you apply the better the chances of you being accepted. HP schools accept applicants on a rolling admission basis, so the earlier your application is, the more seats there are available. We cannot stress enough how important it is to apply early.
  11. Keep the HPA Office updated frequently as you receive secondary applications. The committee letter of evaluation is part of the secondary application for medical school. For other professions, keep the HPA Office informed of their specific instructions for sending supporting letters.
  12. If all deadlines have been met, all forms filed and your secondary applications carefully completed, you can expect to hear about interviews as early as October. Acceptances are offered as early as November and as late as the first day of classes.
