Ronald Thomas, president of the University of Puget Sound, is a member of the Leadership Circle for the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. This commits the university to achieve climate neutrality.

The City of Tacoma is a member of the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign. Members of the Tacoma City Council established the Green Ribbon Climate Action Task Force to lead the City's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and curb global warming in compliance with the Kyoto Protocol.
