Publicly owned since 1893, Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) has been supplying the City of Tacoma with water and electric power for over a century. After World War I, to promote Tacoma’s commercial electric lighting industry, lamps were given to businesses. Residential customers also received free appliances when they purchased services to encourage manufacturing and municipal power usage. Today, instead of promoting electrical power usage, utilities encourage customers to think seriously about energy conservation.
