Purchasing Technology

The University of Puget Sound recognizes that a broad spectrum of technology is available to students and it can be challenging to ascertain which technology will meet their needs throughout their academic career. The following are recommended configurations that are known to be well-suited for most purposes. Minimum or Basic Configuration

This configuration will be usable in most situations or university programs and will provide you access to the university’s core applications such as Microsoft Office, vDesk, Internet browsing, and email clients. It can be seen as the minimum known configuration for computing devices on the campus.

Hard Drive 256 GB, 5400 RPM
Operating System Windows 10 (Home or Pro) or Current macOS
Screen Size and Resolution 12" or greater with 1920×1080 resolution
Wireless 802.11 A/C with 2.4 gHz and 5gHz capability

Processor Intel i5 or m5 or greater

Advanced Configuration

This configuration will be usable in all but the most technologically demanding university programs and will provide you access to the university’s core applications such as Microsoft Office, vDesk, Internet browsing, and email clients as well as improved speed, enhanced performance on higher-end applications live video editing or mathematical computations. It can be seen as an excellent configuration for the vast majority of computing needs on campus.

Memory or RAM 8GB or greater (12–16 GB preferred)
Hard Drive 256 GB or larger Solid State Drive
Operating System Windows 10 Pro or Current macOS
Screen Size and Resolution 13" or greater with 1920×1080 resolution
Wireless 802.11 A/C with 2.4 gHz and 5 gHz capability
Inputs and Outputs USB 3.0, USB C, and/or Thunderbolt
Processor Intel i5 or i7
Video Processor 2 GB or more of dedicated Video RAM

Premium Configuration

This configuration will be usable in all university programs and will excel at advanced computing requirement such as 4K video editing, audio editing, advanced computation, mass storage, software development, and other intensive applications. It can be seen as the flagship configuration for computing devices on the campus.

Hard Drive 500 GB Solid State Drive with second internal drive for storage
Operating System Windows 10 Pro or Current macOS
Screen Size and Resolution 14" or greater with 4K resolution—15" or greater preferred

Processor Intel i7
Video Processor 4 GB or more of dedicated Video RAM
