Jeffrey Matthews’ teaching and research have focused on business leadership, American foreign policy, international business, and business and technology history. A former bank risk manager and vice president, he has published dozens of articles and three books, including Blacksheep Leadership: A Story about a Leadership Challenge and the Nature of Transformational Leadership (2012), and Alanson B. Houghton: Ambassador of the New Era (2003). His co-edited book, The Art of Command: Military Leadership from George Washington to Colin Powell (2008, 2010), remains required reading at the U.S. Army's Command and General Staff College, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. In nine essays, the book matches a renowned military leader with a vital characteristic of effective leadership. The book also has been translated into Chinese for officer training in the Taiwanese Department of Defense. Matthews is completing the book The Trials of Colin Powell: A Life of Leading and Following. His public lectures include “From Vietnam to the Persian Gulf War: The Education of General Colin Powell” and “African-Americans in Business History.” Matthews teaches leadership courses. He is a founding partner and business director of Camouflaj game studio, which produces video games.
