Since announcing that this year’s Commencement Ceremony would have to be postponed, we have surveyed the Class of 2020 for input into the virtual celebration, and a total of 119 students responded. In addition to providing feedback about the virtual festivities, students also provided feedback about the in-person ceremony in May 2021. We want you to know that we heard you and have updated our plans to reflect your input.
Recently, you received an invitation to participate in the virtual celebration for the Class of 2020. Based on your feedback, the Commencement Planning Committee is hard at work creating a special virtual space that will feature congratulatory remarks from President Crawford and Commencement speaker Deborah Bial, social media posts and congratulatory messages for the Class of 2020, and links to Convocation and other department and affinity celebrations. The Class of 2020 celebration site will go live on Saturday, May 16, and continue with fresh social media content through Sunday, May 17, 2020. In addition, ASUPS has arranged for a virtual performance for graduates, their families, and other members of the Puget Sound community, featuring Reggie Watts, bandleader for The Late Late Show With James Corden on CBS, on Sunday, May 17, at 7 p.m. PDT. Livestream details will be available on the ASUPS Facebook page.
This celebration is intentionally not a virtual Commencement. Based on the survey responses and other student feedback, it is clear that many members of the Class of 2020 want to reserve the full Commencement pomp and circumstance for when the class can celebrate together on Sunday, May 16, 2021.
Graduates will be mailed diplomas, diploma covers, and 2020 Commencement keepsake programs shortly after spring semester grades are submitted.
Regalia will be delivered via USPS this week. If you have questions regarding your order, please contact Gracie Sherman at firstname.lastname@example.org or 253.879.2924.
Announcements can still be ordered here.
There was a significant amount of feedback about plans for a combined Commencement Ceremony for the Classes of 2020 and 2021. A number of students expressed—in the survey, as well as through separate emails and phone calls—a strong preference for holding a separate Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2020. We heard you. The Class of 2020 will have its own ceremony, distinct from the Class of 2021, on the morning of Sunday, May 16, 2021. We have made arrangements with area hotels, including two new local facilities that will open in the coming year, to ensure that there is ample lodging for graduates and their families. Please mark your calendars to join us for the festivities. More details about the Class of 2020 Commencement will be sent in the coming weeks.
We hope you find these updated plans responsive to the Class of 2020’s feedback. We care deeply about your Puget Sound experience and are hard at work planning celebratory moments that we hope will honor your many achievements and contributions to the university. You have our very best wishes as you enter this new phase in your engagement with the University of Puget Sound.
