We asked Corrie...

How would you describe your role and organization to a college student?
I work at an aquaculture research facility that is part of Hawaii Pacific University. I am the Hatchery Manager in the Shrimp Department, where we breed and produce Litopenaeus vannamei (Pacific white shrimp). Our main projects right now are developing breeding programs for other companies that best suit their rearing conditions.

What can a student expect to experience by job shadowing you?
They can expect to experience day to day aquaculture work, possibly including hatchery, maturation, and grow out husbandry tasks. They'll get a tour of a our biosecure shrimp facilities (pre-visit biosecurity measures will need to be taken) and possibly a tour of our Finfish department's facilities.

ATTENTION: Some personal information may be required by the Oceanic Institute in order for students to access the biosecure tank and/or handle animals. The Oceanic Institute will require students to complete a Volunteer Application and sign a Waiver, Hold Harmless and Indemnity Agreement. These forms will be provided to students matched with Corrie. Please contact CES if you have any questions or concerns.

Why do you want to host Logger Students?
I would have loved to have this type of opportunity when I was a student, so I'd like to help fellow Loggers by hosting students. It's a great way to figure out if the field is really what you want to do before fully committing.
