How would you describe your role and organization?

I work in a very busy podiatry clinic. I see all sorts of conditions from wounds, to functional disabilities to fungal toe nails. Everything from the top of the socks to the tip of the toes. Thus have to know about all body systems.
Also, surgery half days.

How would the skills and competencies gained through a liberal arts education be beneficial in the type of work you do?

Communication! The "nitty gritty" of the human body once learned has less effect on knowing something new. Communicating ones assessment, plan and goals is the key. This is toward the patient but also the support staff such as nursing and surgery etc.

What can a student expect to experience by job shadowing you?

A focus on active listening. Communication of diagnosis and treatment with patient buy-in.
This is a subtle skill but so very important. All the while the patient is treated with a feeling of ease.
With the above in mind, I challenge my guests to explore "what do they want to be when they grow up?" This is both as a career but also from a perspective of being.
