Below are upcoming programs/educational opportunities facilitated by BHERT members for the 2018-2019 Academic Year. These programs serve as efforts to increase awareness and invite conversations about issues that campus members have expressed interest in learning more about. Our aim is to be proactive and intentionally invite conversations that can help us better serve our campus community.
What is the Bias-Hate Education Response Team (BHERT)? Who serves on BHERT? What exactly is BHERT’s role on campus? Where can campus members report incidents of bias? Why report? What is the difference between bias and hate? What do incident reports tell us about bias on campus? This conversation aims to heighten awareness about BHERT and invites attendees into an open conversation about bias and hate on campus and what Puget Sound might do going forward. Facilitated by BHERT members Dave Wright (director for Spiritual Life and Civic Engagement & university Chaplain) and Debbie Chee (associate dean of students & director of Residence Life).
Engaging with and thinking about challenging topics such as racism, sexism, homophobia, religious intolerance, and other forms of bias and discrimination may be challenging, and even daunting, but that doesn't make the need to grow our understanding and awareness of them less important in our community. In collaboration with ASUPS' Anti-Bias Campaign, this workshop seeks to raise awareness about bias and guides the audience through defining different forms of bias; the impact of bias at Puget Sound; and what we all can do to create a campus where students, staff members, and faculty members feel they belong. As part of the workshop, the presenters will show a student led video produced by ASUPS where students share and make visible some of the experiences they have had on campus with the goal of heightening awareness about bias; courageously sharing about their experiences with bias on campus.
Office of Security Services is often called upon to respond to various emergent needs and situations for campus members. An important part of their work is to provide a safe and secure environment for the campus community. This includes providing educational opportunities for campus members to learn about the scope of responses undertaken by Security Services, including basic medical, suspicious activities, and criminal response. The Chief Diversity Officer and Director of Security Services invites campus members to learn about Security response on campus and to engage conversations about Security related policy and procedures as we think about how we can continue to best serve the campus community.
