COACHES

Philip Willenbrock - Head Coach

Phil Willenbrock returns for his seventh season leading the Loggers in 2008. In the previous six seasons, Willenbrock has reestablished pride in the football program at Puget Sound.

Since joining the Loggers, the Willenbrock-led teams have become among the most dangerous rushing teams in the Northwest Conference, leading the conference in rushing in 2004, 2005 and 2006. In addition, the Loggers also ranked first in total defense in 2004 and had the top scoring offense in 2006.

In six seasons, Willenbrock has coached 11 First Team All-Northwest Conference selections. In 2007, offensive lineman Steve Palmer was selected to play in the Aztec Bowl, the first UPS player ever selected to play in the NCAA Division III all-star game. Football players have also been honored off the field, including three straight Tim McDonough Awards for commitment to faith and service.

The record books have also been rewritten under Willenbrock. Running back Rory Lee set seven school records while playing for the Loggers. Quarterback Andy Carlson set a school record for total offense in a career while playing for Willenbrock and the 2006 team set a school record for points in a season (327) and most yards rushing (2,674).

Willenbrock joined the University of Puget Sound from Allegheny College, where he served as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach from 1998-2001. His coaching career began at San Francisco State in 1990, where he served as offensive line coach for three seasons and the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator from 1993-94.

Following the elimination of the SFSU program in 1995, Willenbrock coached in the high school ranks as assistant head coach at Wasson High School in Colorado Springs, Colo. and was the head coach at Doherty High School, also in Colorado Springs, in 1996. Willenbrock returned to collegiate coaching in 1997 at the University of South Dakota before joining the Allegheny staff in 1998.

A native of State College, Penn., Willenbrock is a 1989 graduate of Gettysburg College. Willenbrock earned his Masters of Arts In Sports Administration from San Francisco State in 1992 and is currently working on his Doctorate of Education at Seattle University.

Phil and his wife Karen have three children, Kelsea, Jacob and Kendal.

Jeff Halstead - Offensive Coordinator/Recruiting/Quarterbacks

    In his eighth year on the coaching staff Coach Halstead took over duties as Offensive Coordinator in 2004. A familiar face to Logger fans after an outstanding playing career, Halstead was an eight-time letter winner on both the football and baseball teams. He was named to All-Northwest Conference teams five times. He also currently is the outfield and assistant hitting coach for the Loggers Baseball team in the spring. Halstead still holds the single season record for the most receptions in a season. In addition, Halstead played professional baseball during the summer of 2001 before returning to UPS to earn his Masters Degree in Teaching.

Jared McNeilly - Defensive Coordinator/Secondary/Strength Coach

    Coach McNeilly enters his second year as Defensive Coordinator in his fifth season at Puget Sound. A three-time All-Conference tight end, McNeilly, graduated from Allegheny College in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in physics after a four-year playing career. In 2001, he was named a 2nd-Team Verizon Academic All-American. McNeilly spent 2003 coaching at Pymatuning Valley High in Andover, Ohio, working primarily with linebackers and running backs while also serving as the schools strength and conditioning coach. McNeilly, who is single, lives in Tacoma.

Tom Cline - Outside Linebackers/Academic Coordinator

    Coach Cline begins his fourth season with the Loggers in 2008.  A 1968 graduate of Bellingham High School, Cline played football at Western Washington University prior to a 26-year career with the Washington State Patrol, retiring in 1998 as a lieutenant.  He spent seven years on the Olympia High School staff and was on the WWU staff for spring football 2005 before joining the Puget Sound staff.  Cline holds a Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies from the University of Washington-Tacoma.  Tom lives in Lacey with his wife Doretta.  They have three daughters, Abby, Andie and Allison and two grandsons, Austin and Avery.

Rob Clements - Linebackers

Rob Clements returns for his third season on the Logger coaching staff after four years as a starter on the offensive line.  Clements earned First Team All-NWC honors at offensive tackle.  A 2005 UPS graduate with a degree in business, Clements also earned his Masters In Teaching in 2007 and is an elementary school teacher in Tacoma.

Jared Terrible - Defensive Line/Video Coordinator/Travel Coordinator

Jared Terrible enters his third year with the UPS coaching staff in 2008. He is responsible for coaching the defensive line and works as video coordinator. His coaching experience has included stops at Adams State College (2005) in Colorado, Fort Scott Community College (2004) in Kansas, Western Washington University (2003), Sehome High School (2001-02) and Central Kitsap High School (2000). Jared is a 1998 graduate of Central Kitsap High School and a 2003 graduate of Western Washington University.

Ricky Daley - Wide Receivers

Ricky Daley returns for his second year on the Logger coaching staff in 2008 after spending three years coaching at Waianae High School in Hawaii. An academic All-Conference selection in 1996, Daley was a standout wide receiver at the University of Hawaii and at Boise State University. Baley graduated from Roosevelt High School in Honolulu in 1993 and is a 1997 graduate of University of Hawaii with a degree in psychology. Daley earned a masters in counseling education from Antioch University-Seattle in 2003.

Cote Perkins - Halfbacks

Cote Perkins joins the Logger coaching staff for his first season as the running backs coach.  He is a 2008 graduate of Loyola Marymount University where he was captain of the men's lacrosse team.  Prior to his time at LMU, Perkins played football at the University of San Diego.  Cote, who is from Coronado, Calif., was a two-time all-league quarterback (2002, 2003) for the Coronado High School Islanders.

Al Mahoe - Equipment Manager

Al Mahoe enters his fifth year as equipment manager for the Loggers. A retired supervisor of 42 years at the Port of Honolulu, Mahoe recently moved from Hawaii to the Tacoma area with his wife Cheri. Al is the father of former running backs coach Chad Mahoe and serves as a Board Member of the Logger Club.

Ron Stone - Equipment Manager

    Ron Stone begins his third season as football  equipment manager for the Loggers. A 1961 graduate of UPS, Stone retired after 33 years as an attorney with the United States Treasury Department. Ron and his wife Ann live in University Place.
