Kittredge Gallery Presents: Sculptor Cris Bruch and Photographer Sally Schuh
March 7, 2006
Tacoma, Wash. - Sculptor Cris Bruch exhibits two large scale artworks exploring material and text.
How did I get here? is an installation comprised of illuminated text spilling out of holes punched through galvanized aluminum garbage can lids hugging the floor. It is the reconfiguration of a work first exhibited at the Salt Lake Art Center in 2001. The work’s material and text harken back to Bruch’s more socially conscious art of the 1980s. The second work – a sculpture exquisitely constructed of bent wood and cast iron pipe – is a superb example of Bruch’s mastery at constructing flawless elegant forms as well as the unexpected juxtapositions of materials.
Chris Bruch lives and works in Seattle. He received a M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Bruch has exhibited across the Western United States and more recently in Germany. His work is represented by Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland, Ore. Bruch will give a Gallery Talk on Thursday, April 13, at 4:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
Between the Lines is an installation of works on paper by Sally Schuh. Schuh’s photograms and archival digital prints present oblique, yet intimate, personal images and text that explore an uncertain world. The classic folded paper fortune is the central image in this body of work. Like the child’s game that alternately exposes and closes the folded chambers, this form of the paper fortune is a superb vehicle for revealing, as well as hiding. Mysterious, hidden planes with unrevealed content and text aptly capture the show’s title while phrases repeatedly typed over paper fragments impart a distinct sense of fragility and vulnerability. Sally Schuh lives and works in Seattle. She is a graduate of the University of Washington. Shuh will give a Gallery Talk on Monday, April 3, at 10:30 a.m.
