Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Martin Luther King Jr. day was observed as a national holiday for the first time in 1986. Puget Sound recognized the day and honored Dr. King by holding a small reception in the Human Resources building. The first big event was in 1991, driven by the Black Student Union. Alumnus Reverend Leslie Braxton (’84 with a Divinity degree) was the guest speaker along with a gospel choir. This celebration was held in Kilworth Memorial Chapel where our annual celebration and lectures have been held since. Every year since 1991, Puget Sound has sponsored educators, city council people, and founders of important rights groups such as Black Nativity, to be the guest speaker. It has always been a free celebration.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is the only federal holiday recognized as a national day of service. This is Puget Sound's third year of participating in the Day of Service. The Day of Service is open to all students, faculty and staff and their families. For more information about how to get involved go the the MLK Day of Service webpage.
