Volunteer with us!

Have an extra hour on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday afternoon? Passionate about reducing waste or fighting hunger? Then email foodsalvage@pugetsound.edu to find out more about volunteering with the Food Salvage program!

Food Salvage

Food Salvage was started in 2005 by a student who saw that leftover food in the SUB was often thrown in the trash and wanted to reduce the waste while also helping those in need. Now in its 9th year, volunteers salvage food from the SUB three times a week and deliver it to the Guadalupe House, a transitional house in downtown Tacoma.

Food Salvage is a great way to make a big impact in someone’s life without a huge time commitment. Volunteers are asked to commit to a one hour block on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday afternoons (sometime between 3 and 6 pm). Groups consist of 2 or 3 volunteers, and one person must have consistent access to a car. Students can sign up in teams or as individuals.

Volunteer Requirements

Students volunteering with Food Salvage must have:

  • A current food handler's permit obtained by taking an online course offered by the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department and arranged by CIAC
  • Automobile insurance on their vehicle if it is used in conjunction with the program
