Perspectives is the on-campus and in Tacoma portion of the Orientation process that cultivates a welcoming and home-making experience for new students. The program’s title is ultimately a play on words because its purpose is to provide a multitude of new perspectives for the recently arrived students. Whether it is recognizing the importance of diversity on the Puget Sound campus or experiencing Tacoma city life firsthand, students gain a familiarity with the place they will (or already do) call home.
The Perspectives program allows the new Puget Sound students to become better acquainted with what is beyond the campus itself. This occurs through participation in community service and sustainable group activities at various venues in the Tacoma area, lead by Perspectives leaders, as well as events like the Campus Life Skit. All in all, the Perspectives program is meant to cultivate a sense of belonging and closeness, allowing students to feel at home, safe, and comfortable in their new environment.
In addition to the other activities, this part of the Orientation process gives students a variety of opportunities and platforms to have their registration questions answered. New students receive input from their Perspectives Leaders, Peer Advisors, and Academic Advisors during the days leading up to academic registration. The appointments and informative conversations that happen during Perspectives lead students to have a clear direction and feel well prepared for the registration period itself.
