Kittredge Gallery: Recent Work by Art Faculty, Aug. 22 - Nov. 5, 2011

October 3, 2011

Tacoma, Wash.Kittredge Gallery opens the 2011–12 academic year with an exhibition of recent work by Puget Sound art department faculty members. Show and Tell: Art Department Faculty 2011 offers students, the university community, and campus visitors a chance to explore the artistic interests and influences that inform both the work and teaching of these talented artists/professors. The show opens Monday Aug. 22 and runs until Saturday, Nov. 5. The opening reception is 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 7.

The artworks in the exhibition range from thickly textured paintings to ceramic sculptures. Works on view by John McCuistion, professor of art and chair of the department, are mixed-media ceramics that reference the effects and consequences of war. Michael Johnson, professor of art, is exhibiting a newly created group of wall-mounted abstract sculptures that move away from his previous object-based work to focus on form and materials. Associate Professor Janet Marcavage is a printmaker whose works from the past two years use the printing process as a matrix to explore visual pattern. Elise Richman, associate professor of art makes thickly layered paintings that are both topographical landscapes and formal meditations on the process of painting. Becky Frehse, an adjunct member of the faculty, is a painter who uses memorabilia, reclaimed artifacts, and almost-antique objects to construct stories about human interaction with the natural world.

A series of gallery talks by the exhibiting faculty members will be scheduled during the run of the exhibition, starting with a discussion by Janet Marcavage during Homecoming and Family Weekend on Sept. 16, at 4:30 p.m., in Kittredge Gallery. Please consult the Puget Sound website at www.pugetsound.edu/calendar for information on additional programming.

Kittredge Gallery serves as a teaching tool for the art department and a cultural resource for both the university and the community at large, exhibiting work by noted regional and national artists. Exhibits and talks are free and open to the public.
