April 19, 2011

Tacoma, Wash. The 2011 Senior Art Show features work by eight seniors who are graduating with their Bachelor of Art in studio art. This group exhibition showcases a diverse range of subjects and media and includes paintings, prints, mixed-media works, sculpture, and installation art. The artworks on view offer a lively and engaging opportunity to see a variety of work by these emerging young talents.

A public reception honoring the artists will be held on Wednesday, April 20, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Kittredge Gallery, University of Puget Sound.

The eight graduating studio majors are:

Aaron Badham, sculpture and installation
Jenni Denekas, painting
Isaac S. Lewin, printmaking
Valerie Moreland, ceramics
Alea Robertson, painting
Elle Vargas, printmaking
Raye Watts, mixed-media sculpture
Mary Wolfe, painting and mixed media

The 2011 Collins Memorial Library Art Award went to Raye Watts for her work Altar I (pictured above), which will be on display in the library for one year.  A double major in English literature and studio art, Watts grew up in San Diego and admits that she “can neither surf nor develop a satisfactory tan.” Since moving to Tacoma, she has become a contributing member of the student art and craft market, and vows to buy one piece of art a month as way of engaging with the local creative community.
