Tacoma, Wash. – University of Puget Sound’s Kittredge Gallery announces the 2010 Art Students Annual, on display from Nov. 22 to Dec. 11, 2010. The opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. Merit awards, donated by local art-related businesses and institutions will be presented at 6 p.m. The reception is open to the university community, as well as the general public.
The Art Students Annual is a longstanding tradition for the Puget Sound art department. Any student currently enrolled at University of Puget Sound who has taken a studio class either on campus or in a study abroad program is eligible to enter the juried show; students are not required to be art majors. Generally, the artworks submitted for exhibition were created as part of class assignments or independent studies supervised by the art faculty. Studio courses offered by Puget Sound’s art department include painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, ceramic sculpture, and photography. The show presents an intriguing range of problem-solving approaches in a variety of media.
The juror for this year’s exhibition is Spencer Ebbinga, assistant professor of art in sculpture and ceramics, co-chair and head of the 3-D area, Department of Art, Pacific Lutheran University. Ebbinga has a B.F.A. in studio art from University of Kentucky, and an M.F.A. in sculpture from Arizona State University. His ceramic sculptures have been exhibited in Philadelphia, Tacoma, Tempe, Phoenix, Baltimore, and China. Ebbinga’s works combine ceramics, mixed media, and found objects to create evocative sculptures about important life experiences.
“My work is a visual record of experiences in my life that I consider to be significant periods of enlightenment, transformation, and growth,” Ebbinga has stated. “These moments are meaningful in such a powerful manner that I am compelled to create them in physical space allowing me to comprehend their impact on my life … [and] to open a conversation with you about similar revelations.”
Kittredge Gallery serves as a teaching tool for the art department and a cultural resource for both the university and the community at large, exhibiting work by noted regional and national artists. Exhibits and talks are free and open to the public.
