Interfaith Student Leaders Gather at University of Puget Sound
February 9, 2010
TACOMA, Wash. – Student leaders of interfaith groups from campuses nationwide are converging at University of Puget Sound, Feb. 13–15, for the fourth national “Coming Together” event. This gathering, supported by the Association of College and University Religious Affairs (ACURA), offers the chance for student leaders to join forces for a weekend of programs, conversation, and resource-sharing in support of religious pluralism.
The keynote speaker will be Stephen Prothero, chair of the religion department at Boston University and the spring 2010 Swope Endowed Lecturer for University of Puget Sound. The well-known author of Religious Literacy will give a talk at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 15, in Schneebeck Concert Hall. Ticket information is below.
“Coming Together” will give student leaders and faculty the opportunity to converse about the ways that religious diversity intersects with the academic life of colleges and universities. As many religious traditions incorporate written and spoken verse, there will be an interfaith poetry performance, followed by a workshop on engaging poetry and religious practice. Guest speakers will also explain the spiritual roots of sustainability work and help participants consider ways to bridge the gap between spirituality, sustainability, and social justice.
Students from University of Southern California, Stanford, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, and many other campuses will attend. They will represent faiths including Christianity, Judaism, Baha’i, Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, and Buddhism, as well as agnosticism and a variety of Pagan traditions.
“Coming Together” has previously been held at Princeton, Johns Hopkins, and University of Southern California. Each gathering is planned and designed by student and staff leadership from the host institution. Participation in “Coming Together” is open to nominated students from all campuses.
The event is organized by the Office of Spirituality, Service and Justice, headed by University Chaplain Rev. Dave Wright ’96.
