Tacoma, Wash. – This January and February Kittredge Gallery exhibits recent work by Michael Johnson, associate professor of sculpture at University of Puget Sound. The exhibition includes nine wood sculptures and three works from his Plastic Drawing series.
Johnson takes everyday objects and dramatically scales them up, focusing viewers’ attention on the object’s shape and volume rather than original function. The play of light on the faceted wood surfaces further accentuates the outlines of each work and adds movement and texture.
Michael Johnson received his B.F.A. in sculpture from University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, and his M.F.A. from University of Cincinnati. He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in 1995, and served on the board of directors of the International Sculpture Center (Hamilton, N.J.) for six years. He has exhibited in one-person and invitational exhibitions in museums and art centers across the U.S., including the Seattle Art Museum; Aronof Center in Cincinnati, Ohio; Delaware Center for Contemporary Art; Delaware Art Museum; Grounds for Sculpture in Trenton, N.J.; and Masur Museum in Monroe, La. Johnson also has shown work at the Gallery Gerulata in Slovakia, and Izu Kogen Museum of Art in Ito, Japan. He has been teaching at Puget Sound since fall 2001.
Johnson’s work will be on view from Jan. 18 through Feb. 20. An opening reception will be held Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. The reception is open to the university community as well as the general public.
Kittredge Gallery serves as a teaching tool for the art department and a cultural resource for both the university and the community at large, exhibiting work by noted regional and national artists. Exhibits and talks are free and open to the public.
