Kittredge Gallery's 2013 Art Students Annual, Juried by Helen O’Toole

November 18, 2013

TACOMA, Wash
.University of Puget Sound’s Kittredge Gallery announces the 2013 Art Students Annual, on display from Nov. 18 to Dec. 14, 2013. The opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. Merit awards will be presented at 6 p.m. The reception is open to the university community, as well as the general public.

The Art Students Annual is a longstanding tradition for the Puget Sound art department. Any student currently enrolled at University of Puget Sound who has taken a studio class either on campus or in a study abroad program is eligible to enter the juried show; students are not required to be art majors. Artworks submitted for the exhibition were created as part of class assignments or independent studies supervised by art faculty members. Studio courses offered by Puget Sound’s art department include painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, ceramic sculpture, and photography. The show presents an intriguing range of creative approaches in a variety of media.

The juror for this year’s exhibition is Helen O’Toole, co-chair and associate professor of painting and drawing at University of Washington in Seattle. O’Toole was born in western Ireland, and moved to Chicago in 1987 to pursue an M.F.A. in painting at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago. In 1989 she was awarded a scholarship to study at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.

In 1991 O’Toole was awarded a fellowship to do a residency at the Fine Arts Work Center Provincetown. She later participated in residency programs at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Ireland, and the Bemis Foundation, Omaha, Nebraska. From 1993 to 1995, O’Toole was a full-time lecturer at LaSalle-SIA College of the Arts, Singapore. She has had solo exhibitions in Ireland, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Provincetown, and Seattle. O’Toole is currently represented by Linda Hodges Gallery, Seattle.

Kittredge Gallery serves as a teaching tool for the Puget Sound art department and a cultural resource for both the university and the community at large, exhibiting work by noted regional and national artists. Exhibits and talks are free and open to the public. Please note: The gallery will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, Wednesday, Nov. 27, through Saturday, Nov. 30, and will resume regular hours on Monday, Dec. 2.
