Lavay Smith and LeRoy Bell on Stage for the Spring Zing Festival

April 5, 2013

There’s plenty to do, on and off campus at University of Puget Sound’s Spring Family Weekend, April 12–14

TACOMA, Wash. – Renowned jazz vocalist Lavay Smith and soul and rock singer LeRoy Bell will headline the music program for this year’s Tacoma Proctor District family festival known as Spring Zing.

Lavay Smith, who has toured internationally performing blues and jazz, will perform with the University of Puget Sound Jazz Band on Friday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m., at the Blue Mouse Theatre on Proctor Street, near N. 26th St. A master of classic favorites from the 1940s and ’50s, Smith has been described by Blues Revue magazine as “pure class and a sense of humor … a time machine in vintage threads.” The Los Angeles Times said Smith has “a lush vocal style recalling both Bessie Smith and Dinah Washington.” Ticket information is below.

LeRoy Bell and His Only Friends, a popular Seattle-based band known for its wide range of genres and with a sixth album just out, will perform on Saturday, April 13, on the Proctor District stage in front of Safeway. The free, public concert will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bell, a finalist in The X Factor musical competition television show, will be joined on stage by the Pacific Northwest’s Kim Archer Band and Tacoma’s own The Profess-ers. The outdoor concert is free and open to all.

The musical performances are just some of the off-campus activities for University of Puget Sound students and families to enjoy during Spring Family Weekend, running from Friday, April 12, to Sunday, April 14.

Sponsored by Associated Students of University of Puget Sound (ASUPS), Spring Family Weekend gives students and their families a chance to sit in on a class together, enjoy musical and theater performances, attend the Spring Lu`au on Saturday, April 13, visit art exhibits, take in a softball game, and explore the great variety of life in Tacoma. Tickets for most events can be obtained by visiting Wheelock Information Center or by calling 253.879.6013.

Spring Zing, from 4 p.m. on Friday, April 12, through Saturday, April 13, takes place in the historic Proctor District. It includes free horse carriage rides, Proctor Farmers Market, food trucks, and performances throughout the neighborhood. Spring Zing is sponsored by the North Proctor Merchants Association and ASUPS student programs.
