Polynesian Dreaming? Come to the Spring Lu`au for Music, Dance, and Food

April 3, 2013

All are invited to the dinner and show, Saturday, April 13

TACOMA, Wash. – Grass skirts and sunglasses are optional at the upcoming Spring Luau, where neighbors and visitors to University of Puget Sound can enjoy a soul-warming night of Hawaiian food, music, and exotic dance.

The annual Spring Lu`au will be held Saturday, April 13, with dinner in Wheelock Student Center and the stage show in Memorial Fieldhouse. Dinner will be served from 6 to 8 p.m., and the performance, with traditional costumes and dance, will begin at 8 p.m. See below for ticket details and a map of campus.

The traditional island food and colorful entertainment of this event attract nearly 1,000 people each year, making it one of the biggest public celebrations of Pacific Island culture in the state. The theme for the Hui O Hawai`i student club’s 43rd annual Spring Lu`au is P?p?kahi I Holomua, which means “United to Move Forward.”

"There is a large population of students who grew up in Hawai`i that attend Puget Sound, and it is wonderful to have this home away from home here in the Pacific Northwest,” said Lu`au co-chair Kariann Lee ’13, who is leading the event committee with co-chairs Vanessa Corwin ’13 and Patti Connors ’14.

“The Spring Lu`au is a special cultural event that we have the pleasure of sharing with our fellow peers, faculty, staff and the local community. The lu`au is an opportunity to join together to share and participate in the cultural significance of our dance, and we invite you to enjoy this evening with us."

Music will be provided by the band Na Leo O Hawai`i. The show will include about a dozen dances from cultures including Hawaiian, Tahitian, Samoan, and Maori, as well as ritual face-painting, grass skirts, the malo (loincloth), and colorful island dresses. The dinner will include kalua pig, huli huli chicken, lomi lomi salmon, macaroni salad, poi, chicken long rice, haupia, pineapple, and a vegan dish pineapple stir fry.

Tickets will go on sale Monday, March 25 and are available in advance or at the door. For more information send an email message to luautix@pugetsound.edu.
